A RIOT GUIDE TO NICOTINE SHOTS
They might come in a little bottle, but nic shots are no less mighty. When it comes to creating the perfect vape, understanding how nic shots work and the best way to use them can ramp your experience right up.
WHAT ARE NICOTINE SHOTS?
Nicotine shots, or nic shots as they are more casually called, are 10ml bottles of flavourless e-liquid that contain a high concentration of nicotine. Most nic shots have around 18-20mg of nicotine in. They are designed to be mixed into shortfills to create a tailored nicotine strength based on a vaper’s personal preference.
WHAT IS IN A NICOTINE SHOT?
A nicotine shot usually has three main ingredients. Nic shots do not contain any flavours to avoid disrupting the flavour of your chosen shortfill.
| NICOTINE | VEGETABLE GLYCERIN (VG) | PROPYLENE GLYCOL (PG) |
|---|---|---|
| Most commonly 18mg or 20mg | VG is responsible for the vapour you get when vaping | PG carries the flavour and produces the throat hit |
WHAT VG/PG RATIO ARE NIC SHOTS?
Nic shots come in a range of VG/PG ratios, but the most popular - and the one we sell at Riot - is 70/30 VG/PG. Most shortfills come in this same ratio, so the nic shot is designed to match this for a well-balanced vape. The higher VG means you’ll get bigger clouds alongside a smoother throat hit.
ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF NIC SHOTS?
Yes, there are two main types of nicotine shots:
- FREEBASE NICOTINE - The traditional form of nicotine; you’ll get gradual nicotine absorption and a stronger throat hit. This is the type most used in a nic shot
- NICOTINE SALT SHOTS - Offering a smoother throat hit and faster absorption, nic salt shots more closely replicate smoking a cigarette
HOW TO USE NICOTINE SHOTS
Now that we’ve covered the basics of a nic shot, the most important part is knowing what to do with them. The most common way to use a nic shot is with a shortfill.
A shortfill comes in a 60ml bottle with 50ml of e-liquid inside. This leaves 10ml of space for your nic shot. You’ll end up with a 60ml bottle of eliquid with a final strength of about 3 mg/ml nicotine.
1. PREPARE YOUR NIC SHOT AND SHORTFILL BY REMOVING THE LID
2. POUR YOUR 10ML NIC SHOT INTO THE SHORTFILL AND GIVE IT A SHAKE
3. LEAVE TO STEEP (LET THE LIQUIDS SETTLE) AND ENJOY YOUR VAPE
CAN YOU USE MORE THAN ONE NIC SHOT?
Yes you can use more than one nic shot if you want to increase the nicotine strength of your e-liquid. However, you wouldn’t be able to do this using the method above, as the shortfill bottle wouldn’t be big enough. You could pour out an extra 10ml of shortfill liquid from the bottle, but then this changes the nicotine levels, as you have less liquid to dilute the nic shot in. You’ll need to understand your desired nicotine strength to start playing around with extra nic shots.
HOW TO GET THE RIGHT NICOTINE STRENGTH WITH NIC SHOTS
There are two main options for personalising your nicotine strength. Some shortfills come in 100ml bottles, so you could buy one of those and add nic shots accordingly. Alternatively, you can buy empty bottles and add your liquids to them.
Here are some example amounts and how much nicotine you’ll get when you add additional nic shots.
| SHORTFILL SIZE | NIC SHOT(S) ADDED | NIC SHOT STRENGTH | FINAL VOLUME | FINAL NICOTINE STRENGTH |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50ml shortfill | 1 x 10ml | 18 mg/ml | 60ml | ≈ 3mg/ml |
| 50ml shortfill | 2 x 10ml | 18 mg/ml | 70ml | ≈ 6mg/ml |
| 100ml shortfill | 2 x 10ml | 18 mg/ml | 120ml | ≈ 3mg/ml |
| 100ml shortfill | 4 x 10ml | 18 mg/ml | 140ml | ≈ 5mg/ml |
CAN YOU ONLY USE NIC SHOTS WITH SHORTFILLS?
No, you don’t have to only use nic shots with shortfills. Nicotine shots are primarily designed for use with shortfills though, and this is the way we would best advise using them. You could also use a nic shot to create your own DIY vape juice or even to top up the nicotine strength of a low-nicotine vape juice. With either option, you need to calculate your final nicotine strength carefully and mix your liquids well to ensure the nicotine is evenly distributed.
What we would say is do not mix nic shots with pre-mixed 10ml bottles of e-liquid, as there’s no room and it can ruin the flavour balance.
